Our Priests
The church was opened on the 2nd May 1865
by Bishop Richard Roskell of Nottingham and in the early years
the parish was served
by the Jesuit Fathers until it was given its first parish priest
by the diocese of Leeds in 1874. The first parish priest was
Father Alfred Watson (1874 – 1877) and the longest serving
was Father William Ward 1926 – 1949. Father Joseph Stoker
was parish priest for 18 years, the last one before the parish
was transferred from the Diocese of Leeds to the Diocese of
Salford in 1988.
The first parish priest after the transfer
was Father
Joseph Burns 1988- 1993. Since 1993 the parishoners
have been served by Father John Chaloner.
