Our Priests

The church was opened on the 2nd May 1865 by Bishop Richard Roskell of Nottingham and in the early years the parish was served by the Jesuit Fathers until it was given its first parish priest by the diocese of Leeds in 1874.

The first parish priest was Father Alfred Watson (1874 – 1877) and the longest serving was Father William Ward 1926 – 1949. Father Joseph Stoker was parish priest for 18 years, the last one before the parish was transferred from the Diocese of Leeds to the Diocese of Salford in 1988.

The first parish priest after the transfer was Father Joseph Burns 1988- 1993. Since 1993 the parishoners have been served by Father John Chaloner.

Father Chaloner has written a book ‘Miss Mac the Church Cat’ a delightful story for all ages. Miss Mac the church cat, who sadly disappeared just before the book was published in 2004, takes the reader through the church’s year and shares her adventures in the woods, streams and hills around Dunsop Bridge and of course the church.

The book has been so popular that a CD of the story has been published. The book or CD can be obtained from the publishers, Redemptorist Publications 01420 88222, www.rpbooks.co.uk, and also from the Church.

Ko-Ko, the cat who has replaced Miss Mac in the presbytery, has also a literary bent and has written his own book published in November 2006. For more details please click here. There are also two websites which feature the books by Miss Mac and Ko-Ko. They are: www.purr-n-fur.org.uk/featuring/church04.html and http://purr-n-fur.org.uk/folios/folios02.html
